1. Ability to edit "Exams" setup the same way you can edit "Quizzes" setup.

   There is no edit function with the Exams in the "New Experience" platform.One can only edit Quizzes. Why would you be able to edit one and not the other? I can't even set a due date for an Exam. Seems like basic functionality. It was possible in the previous platform. See attached image for new platform availability.

3. New CMS Poorly Implemented.

   I finished out last year using version 6 of the IT Essentials course. Over the summer I wondered why so many instructors were complaining about the new V7 version of the course. I figured it was just because folks were getting used to the new Moodle CMS. After starting this week to build my IT Essentials course in the new CMS, I see why people are frustrated. Rarely would I vent in a public forum like this but I’m so frustrated I feel the need to speak out on this.

   Let me preface this by saying I’m not opposed to Moodle, although Canvas is definitely a better CMS. I’ve used Moodle to teach my other classes for over 8 years. For 5 of those years I was the Moodle Admin for my district. In fact, I piloted Moodle for my district and trained over 150 teachers how to use it.

   In CISCO’s version 7 of the IT Essentials course the curriculum is not the problem – the poor implementation of the CMS is. These problems are easily fixable by simply turning on some of the default Moodle features. Unfortunately, my new section of the class starts the Monday after Thanksgiving so I don’t have time to wait for requests to get voted high enough to get considered for implementation. Because of this, the new version is unusable in my situation and I have no choice but to use v6 of the class this school year.

   Features that need to be immediately added:

   1. The ability to upload assignments from multiple sources. Uploads from Google drive and OneDrive repositories should be turned on. With many of us teaching in a virtual format the ability to upload from these sources is essential. Yes, I know students can download their assignment from these sources and then upload them as assignments. They shouldn’t have to and since many students are stuck using Chromebooks this unnecessarily complicates the process. (See attached “Google drive upload” screen shot.)

   2. The Moodle Annotate Assignment feature (similar to Speed Grader in Canvas) NEEDS TO BE TURNED ON. Without it teachers need to download assignments to grade and then upload them back to Moodle so students can see the results. This is ridiculously inefficient for instructors and this simple and easily implemented feature needs to be turned on. (See attached “grading screen” screenshot).

   Other features that need to be turned on for better usability:

   1. Collapsible Course Format (https://docs.moodle.org/310/en/Collapsed_Topics_course_format). This allows the topics in the center of the screen to open and close. Without it, later in the course the student has to scroll through multiple screens to get down to the unit they need to work on. (See attached “mainscreen” screen shot).

   2. Side Blocks – Turn on the block feature so that teachers can customize the blocks on the right side of the screen. (See attached “mainscreen” screen shot for an example of the HTML side block). Granted a work around to this is to put content in Labels but for student usability the blocks are a better option.

   3. Announcement feature – Turn on the Moodle announcement tool. Since many of us have to teach in a fully virtual format right now this feature is essential for communicating daily work to students. A workaround is to use the forum feature but the Announcement tool is built exactly for this task and it can be easily turned on in the Moodle admin panel.

   Again, I’m not complaining about the CISCO curriculum which is excellent. Nor am I necessarily complaining about Moodle which is sufficient to do the job if the necessary features are turned on. My complaint is that so many of the basic easily implemented features in Moodle have been so disabled as to render the new version of the course unusable from a practical standpoint. I hope this get remedied soon because when the legacy version of these courses are not available any more , then what?

4. Build in virtual machine/simulator

   I would love to see a VM simulator for ITE Windows units. There are so many windows labs that is is overwhelming for many students and completelyinaccessible to non-windows users (most students have chromebooks, now). If it could be handled in a simulated environment, it would be less overwhelming and much more accessible to students. Another course this would be useful in is Cyber classes where students can try some hacking (white hat, of course) tools.

5. Go back to Canvas

   Moodle is so limited. Can we go back to Canvas? I have to spend a lot more time building courses. Time I do not have and I have to spend time lookin for workarounds. Way more time than I have.

   Nevertheless, the strategic benefits of bringing the course management experience in house outweighed the many fine aspects of Canvas. There are two key reasons that drove this choice:

   1. It enables the Networking Academy to expand its global reach. To expand our global reach, the NetAcad platform is transitioning to a federated architecture with multiple instances located across the world. Canvas is unfortunately not available in every region. We could not stay in Canvas while continuing to expand our global reach.
   2. It allows the Networking Academy to be more responsive to changing dynamics in education. One example of this is the integration of Webex video conferencing and messaging into the learning experience to support distance learning. By bringing the solution in-house, we have been able to aggressively pursue this opportunity and will be able to release some of the first fruits in the coming months.

   There are other benefits to the new course management experience that are summarized here, but the most salient driver of the decision is how it enabled the Networking Academy to even more aggressively pursue our mission to empower teaching and learning in every corner of the world. For these reasons, the Networking Academy has no plans to roll back the course management experience to Canvas.

7. LTI Integration

   • The benefit of the LTI integration is grades automatically come over to the LMS so grading is a snap - very important when you have hundreds of students taking the course each session.
   • In addition, with SSO (single-sign on) and deep links, students can login to our LMS and then we would automatically push their credentials over to Cisco and log them in automatically - all in one click.
   • Finally, if Cisco could provide deep links, we could can "gate" the Cisco resources we want the students to access and only allow them to see what is next on a week-by-week basis - instead of letting them see everything and skipping ahead.

8. Archiving Self-enroll Courses for Instructors by themselves

   Hello Cisco Academy Team,

   Please give the instructors and instructor trainers the ability to better organize their learn tab. If an instructor is enrolled in a Self-enroll course and concluded all the needed requirements with certification, there is no need for the course to appear as an in-progress course on their side. The academy might be aggregating multiple trainees in one course, but for trainee the course is ended when all the requirements are done from my side. I think we need to be able to archive and un-enroll from the courses from our side.

9. Uploading Online Signature for Certification

10. Make Moodle into Canvas

    Add Video Capabilities for student responses, teacher feedback and demonstration capability, add hyperlinking(to other assignments, pages, outside resources, add ability to upload needed files while building assignments, get rid of editor mode and allow editing from any page, assignment, quiz as needed, add Speed grading capability, add the ability to use LTI apps and integrate zoom, google apps, office365, flipgrid, Quizlet, etc. simplify group work, the list goes on....

11. Stay in Canvas

    As a CTO of a K-12 organization and also as an adjunct instructor in the Cisco Academy I support a variety of platforms. As someone who in my day job helps support some Moodle issues...I would also highly recommend that the Academy stay in Canvas.

    We will see an increase in support needs and time to setup and manage courses and a decrease in functionality and satisfaction. The difference will be great and possibly unsustainable.

    place the horizontal slider scroll bar in grader report at the top of the list of students, not at the bottom.

    When you have 100s of students, one has to scroll vertically down to find the horiz scroll slider, scroll horiz and then scroll back up to see the headlines.

    Another way to solve this issue is to fix the header = the 1st line of the grader report table.

14. Please provide preformatted HTML/CSS styling information (e.g. classes)

    Can you please provide a style guide for how we can add nicely formatted labels to the new course experience (so we can add additional information for students).

15. Incorporate Webex/Teams into netacad

    Integrate Webex and/or Webex Teams into netacad so instructor and students can just click a link from the course menu to start a Webex session.

16. Ability to change start and end dates for a course

    Instructors need the ability to change the beginning and ending dates for a course. Sometines course need to be extended for different reasons that need to run longer than a year.

    Thanks for your suggestion. You can currently change the end date for a course, but the start date is locked and can’t be changed. Unfortunately, we can’t unlock the start date so it can be changed.

19. I thik we need to go back to canvas

    We need to go back to canvas to give the teachers and students a better learning experience. The classy experience we had raised the academy above no far above the the others. It is sad because now it looks like Cisco is not the leader they are just like any other online learning system. The look of it does not do the great curriculum inside and it is hard to tell Cisco from Palo Alto or HP or Juniper. More importantly my students are lost, they are confused by the layout and lack of direction. Please reconsider the move to moodle. It still lacks everything that we initially moved to Canvas to gain. It is a big step backwards. I say Cisco Should just buy Canvas out from under that investment group and become a leader in education too! Cisco would do it way better. Please send this on to Chuck! He would agree!

One example of this is the integration of Webex video conferencing and messaging into the learning experience to support distance learning. By bringing the solution in-house, we have been able to aggressively pursue this opportunity and will be able to release some of the first fruits in the coming months.

For these reasons, the Networking Academy has no plans to roll back the course management experience to Canvas.

    Instructure is an excellent partner to the Networking Academy and Canvas is a great product. One of its strengths is the smooth and polished user experience. This is a testament to the terrific work of their product team that has been optimizing the experience for a decade.

    Nevertheless, the strategic benefits of bringing the course management experience in house outweighed the many fine aspects of Canvas. There are two key reasons that drove this choice:

20. Enable Moodle Dashboard - Work with Moodle in Teams

    The Moodle Dashboard app is made for teachers and students. If your organization uses Moodle and Microsoft Office 365, you can benefit from de cooperative behavior by working with Moodle inside Microsoft Teams. If you as a teacher don't already have teams for your courses, you can easily create education teams with course details, members, feed, calendar and relevant tabs and channels. If you are a student, you can access all teams created for you by the course teacher or an organization administrator. Then you can have quick access to your Moodle course details as well as work in Moodle as usual from Mocrosoft Teams.
