I just ran into this problem for the first time - it is very frustrating and time consuming - I had to do it for two students. The online chat was very helpful and he suggested I make a comment here. At Durham Technical Community College, I have been using the old max of 5 and it was enough. I have a student who is in his third attempt at this course and had 7 prior attempts for one test. He had previously taken the course from a different instructor, so I was unaware he had that many attempts. Why can't the counter be reset to 0 each time a student is enrolled in a new course when the previous courses are concluded or deleted? I can understand how it would be a problem if it was two active courses.
