Limit student communication to just communicating with the Instructor
I love how I can communicate with the students directly. I am concern because these are young people that they may communicate poorly with each other. I am responsible for their activities during this course and I am unable to monitor what they are saying. I teach minors, and I am responsible for their actions during the course.

There is a way to disable the communication between students. The NetAcad Contact or Success Lead at your institution can disable this for the academy. Here are the steps:
-Click on Manage tab
-Click on Institution
-Hover over Courses and click on Managed Accounts (choose institution)
-Click on Permissions
The following options are available to enable/disable:
-Send messages to individual course members
-Send messages to entire class

Yes I fully agree as I'm in the same boat as well, I need some functionally to control the students conversation ability.
